Book Review- Molly Moon #4
An unremarkable hero and her loyal best friend fight for the freedom of her sick twin and destruction of an evil 6 year old scientist, in this mysterious and adventurous book, Molly Moon, Mickey Minus and the Mind Machine by Georgia Byng.
My understanding of this book is that there is a focus on that you don’t have to be pretty, smart of talented to be a hero. Because Molly Moon is a plain clumsy girl who grew up in an orphanage and was bullied by both adults and children, as she was not clever, beautiful or very good at something, until she found the book of Hypnotism.
I could not put the book down, as it was dramatic and exhilarating through out the whole story.
Molly Moon, Mickey Minus and the Mind Machine is a very entertaining and enjoyable book and thoroughly liked reading it.
I would recommend this book to anyone between the age of 7-14 who likes adventure, danger and fun.
Graduation Committee Application
“Education is one of the most powerful weapons you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela
Graduation is a significant event celebrating education and I’d like to be part of it because… I love organising events for example, every year I organise my birthday party. By doing that I practise handling money by sticking to a budget. I enjoy decorating and making things; I also have good ideas and will contribute well to the team. Speaking of that, there is no ’I’ in team so I’ll include others in planning, work well in a team and listen to other ideas.
Here are some of the qualities I have that’ll help me assist to plan Graduation. I’m an organised person and plan my time well to meet deadlines. I have creative abilities, for example, my fashion PRP I did something different and directed a Fashion Show. Also I ‘m a hard working, persistent person and being on the Committee won’t effect my schoolwork.
Let me tell you how I manage responsibilities. I organise a paper round weekly and have to plan ahead otherwise it wouldn’t get done.
I’d like the opportunity to serve the school by being on the Committee.
The Dragonfly Pool by Eva Ibbotson
An unlikely alliance forms between a bunch of ‘savage’ children sent to do a Folk Dance and a Prince who just wants to be free, in this adventurous book, The Dragonfly Pool by Eva Ibbotson.
My thoughts about this book is that it sends a strong message of the importance of friendship, determination and persistence. It’s exciting and held my attention throughout the book because of it’s air of suspense.
The Dragonfly Pool is a book full of fun, adventure and amusment and I really enjoyed reading it.
I would recommend this book to anyone between the age of 8 and 14 who likes dangerous escapedes, tension and entertaining chapters.
High Flyer Term 3
As a homework task I have been discussing my High Flyer Criteria with my parents, we talked about strategies for getting a High Flyer in term 3.
From this discussion I have made plans to achieve my goal of getting a High Flyer and my parents have helped me decide which options to chose out of the five qualites.
We’ve had a conversation about the values behind each of the five qualites and I think talking to my parents really helped.
Impressionistic Art
Impressionistic art uses colour, line and shape to express feelings, thoughts and ideas.
My Impressionistic art is called Celebration because this month, August, is a very busy time for me. I have lots of celebrations coming up, mostly birthdays and parties.
So when I started to draw my artwork I was feeling in a celebration mood and decided to draw about it, after all Impressionistic art IS about expressing feelings.
The colours I chose were mainly bright colours such as orange, pink, purple, blue, green and black to outline.
I think my artwork reflects on my emotions very well and I am proud of my art piece so far.
Migration Museum ‘Unpacking Histories’
Our class went on an excursion to the Migration Museum today and well, I wont bore you with all the unnecessary details (as in how we got there etc) so lets get straight to it…
We were set in groups of about 6 and given a box or suitcase with documents, belongs and photos of a migrant or refugee who had come to Australia and we had to figure out who they were, why they came, how they came etc. Our person was called Phann Pech and he was a Cambodian teacher who had to first pretend he was uneducated then flee to Australia, otherwise he would have been killed.
It was really interesting watching the DVDs after which had more detail about the information we had found out. Some people had had an especially hard life, like a Sudanese guy who had to split up with some of his family and run away with his brother when he was FIVE! Imagine having to worry about being killed when you were FIVE?
I have learnt a lot about migrants and refugees and it’s hard to believe that around 20 to 40 (maybe less) years ago people in Australia thought eating a pizza, having lasagna or noodles was WEIRD!
Expanding Noun Groups
In Literacy we have been working on how to write a quality sentence. We have different names for the describing words and nouns: Pointer - the, he, she, this, that, these etc. Size – small, medium, large etc. Shape – some, many, few, several etc. Colour – blue, black, orange, purple, red etc. Number – three, eight, four, five, nine etc. And finaly type – Japense, American, Australian, English etc.
Here are a few of my sentences…
The several rather fiece- looking American politicans eagerly headed towards the McDonalds sign.
A large group of timid teenagers were mistakenly sent to spy on Mr. ‘Big.’
A small cluster of onlookers said they caught a glimpse of a huge shaggy dog.
A tiny American man looked up to his tall friend and asked, “Hows the view up there?”
A few small Chinese tourists got off the plane excited about their holiday.
Working on my sentences was well needed because most of my old sentences went a bit like this…
Sally asked John, “What ARE you doing up there?”
Big improvement!
Fashion through the Ages
As part of our homework grid for this term we have to present a PRP (Personal Research Project). I have chosen mine on Fashion through the Ages, as in the 1900′s to now or even the future!
A few reasons why I have chosen this topic is because I want to become a fashion designer or real estate developer or something to do with design or fashion and I think this will give me some useful knowlege about my (hopefully) future design career. Also I love fashion and I want to know more about the different styles and what my parents had to wear!
I think this will be a very interesting topic and I am looking foward to presenting it.
Power Community Youth Group
Today was our second lesson of the Power Community Youth program. This time we had Moronia Gerrard who plays for Adelaide Thunderbirds Netball Club, Matt Thomas, Johnathon Jiles and Wade Thompson from Port Adelaide Football Club.
They focused on smoking. Did you know, there are up to 4,00 chemicals in a cigarette? We listed a few, here are some that I thought were the worst. Cadmium – Battery acid, Arsenic – Rat poison, Methanol – Rocket fuel and Toluene – Nail polish remover.
I learned a lot from that lesson and I never want to smoke! I mean Nail polish remover? Yuck!
